Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JCB 444 engines, compatibility and replacement options

The JCB 3CX uses a JCB 444 4.4-litre diesel engine. The exact specification depends on the sub-model and emission tier: the 3CX base model uses a 55kW naturally aspirated or turbocharged engine, the 3CX Sitemaster offers 55kW or 68kW options, the 3CX Super uses a 68kW turbo, and the 3CX Contractor uses an 81kW turbocharged aftercooled engine.

JCB DieselMax is the brand name for Tier 2 and Tier 3 versions of the JCB 444 engine, using mechanical fuel injection.

JCB EcoMax is the Tier 4i and Tier 4 Final version, featuring electronic fuel injection and emissions after treatment to meet stricter regulations. Both are 4.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engines.

The JCB 444 is a 4.4-litre (4,399cc) four-cylinder diesel engine. It is available in naturally aspirated, turbocharged, and turbocharged after-cooled configurations with power outputs ranging from 55kW (74hp) to 97kW (130hp) depending on the variant.

The JCB 444 engine is fitted across a wide range of JCB machinery including backhoe loaders (3CX, 4CX), construction and agricultural telehandlers (530-70, 535-95, 535-125, 540-140, 540-170, 541-70), wheel loaders (416HT, 417HT, 426, 436, 437), skid steer loaders (225, 260, 270, 280, 300, 330), forklifts (TLT30, 940, 950), and dumpers (714, 718, 722, 726).

In many cases yes, but it depends on the specific machine and wiring loom compatibility. Tier 2 to Tier 3 is generally straightforward as both use mechanical fuel injection.

Upgrading from mechanical (Tier 2/3) to electronic (Tier 4i/T4F) requires additional consideration of the engine harness and ECU. Contact Timik Engines for advice on your specific application.

The JCB 444 is a 4.4-litre engine producing up to 97kW (130hp). The JCB 448 is a larger 4.8-litre engine used in higher-output applications above 97kW, such as the JCB 535-95 Agri Super (later models at 108kW) and larger wheel loaders like the 437HT and TM420. The two engines are not interchangeable.
