125hp Six-Cylinder Power from Ford’s TW Series
The Ford TW5 was introduced in 1983 as the entry-level model in Ford’s updated TW range, built at the Basildon factory in Essex. It was the smallest addition to the revised lineup, which replaced the original TW-10, TW-20, and TW-30 designations with the new TW-5, TW-15, TW-25, and TW-35.
The TW range had been developed from Ford’s 401 engine lineage, which had first appeared in the Ford 8000 in 1968 and underpinned the company’s high-horsepower conventional tractor programme for over a decade. The 1983 update brought improved driver comfort, an electronically operated Dual Power transmission activated by a floor-level pedal, and modest power increases across the range.
The TW5 was available in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations, suited to large-scale arable and mixed farming operations where sustained high-power output was required. Its naturally aspirated engine gave it similar mechanical straightforwardness to the 8210, though running at higher revs for a stronger power output.
The Dual Power transmission offered 16 forward and 4 reverse gears, with on-the-move shifting between direct drive and a lower power mode for each gear ratio, providing good field flexibility for cultivation and heavy haulage work. Production ran until 1986, when the TW range was again updated.
The engine fitted to the Ford TW5 is the Ford 401 six-cylinder, liquid-cooled naturally aspirated diesel, displacing 6.6 litres with a square bore and stroke of 112 x 112mm. It is rated at 122hp (91kW) net and 125hp (93.2kW) gross at 2,300rpm, with a maximum torque of 415Nm (306 lb-ft) at 1,800rpm, a compression ratio of 16.3:1, and a firing order of 1-5-3-6-2-4.
Timik Engines re-manufactures this unit to full specification, restoring the block, cylinder head, crankshaft, and rotating assembly to original factory tolerances. Where a TW5 engine has accumulated significant hours or shows signs of wear, a fully re-manufactured unit is the most reliable and cost-effective route back to full working capacity.
The engine block is bored back to standard with new liners fitted. The cylinder head is remanufactured with valve seats re-cut and new valves fitted. The crankshaft is ground to precise tolerances.
All engines are rebuilt in our clean workshop with new pistons and rings, bearings, oil pump, water pump, and complete gasket set. Fuel injection equipment is remanufactured and turbochargers replaced where applicable.
Every engine is dynamometer tested to confirm correct power output, oil pressure, and operating temperatures. Engines are painted and prepared for delivery with full documentation.
