Flexible Couplings for Boat Propeller Shafts
The R&D Marine flexible coupling is designed to fit between the boat propeller shaft coupling and the Twin Disc gearbox output coupling. Constructed with a durable and resilient Polyester Elastomer, the coupling features a contoured flexible disc that provides clearance for bolt heads. This design allows for free flexing to accommodate any temporary misalignment between the engine and propeller shaft caused by movement in the boat’s structure or engine, particularly when the engine is mounted on rubber supports.
In forward thrust, the coupling disc compresses between the two shaft half-couplings, while reverse thrust is handled similarly, with compression on the disc between two fail-safe straps. As a safety feature, in the rare event of disc failure, the steel straps ensure the coupling remains fail-safe, maintaining propeller shaft drive in both forward and reverse directions.
