Common questions about Ford Dorset, Dover and New Holland engine identification
The Dorset (2700 series, 1964–1984) has a pressed steel front timing cover, angle-cut timing gears, no oil pipe between the injection pump and oil filter, and one port on the fresh water pump.
The Dover (2720 series, 1982–1994) has a cast aluminium front timing cover, straight-cut timing gears, an oil pipe between the pump and filter, and usually two ports on the fresh water pump. Dover engines also have larger exhaust and inlet ports.
Check the front timing cover first: pressed steel means a 2700 Dorset, cast aluminium means a 2720 Dover or later Otosan/Dovertech.
Next, check the engine number stamped on the block — numbers up to 6999 are Dorset, 7000–10999 are Dover, 11000–11999 are Otosan, and 12000 onwards are Dovertech. If unsure, send photos to Timik Engines and we will identify it for you.
The original Mermaid Melody uses a Ford 2712E Dorset 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine producing 80HP. The later Melody uses a Ford 2722 Dover 4-cylinder NA engine producing 90HP.
The Melody II is based on the Genesis New Holland 5-litre 4-cylinder NA engine.
Ford Otosan engines are 6-cylinder Dover-type engines manufactured in Turkey from 1994 to around 2005.
They are generally similar to the 2720 Dover series but have the oil pump mounted at the front behind the crank pulley, longer 960mm sumps, and 3-port fresh water pumps.
Engine numbers range from 11000 to 11999. From 2000 onwards, the Dovertech version (engine numbers 12000+) replaced them.
Both are turbocharged 6-cylinder Ford marine engines. The Mistral is non-intercooled, producing 150HP on the Dorset (2704ET) or 160HP on the Dover (2726T).
The Majestic is intercooled, producing 180–225HP on the Dorset (2704-ET-INT) or up to 212HP on the Dover (2726T). The intercooler is the key difference, giving the Majestic significantly more power.
